Today my father in law went to mass.

He hasn't been to a catholic mass in over five years. But suffice it to say that he's been having some distressing health issues and went to mass today for some comfort.

Today of all days... Today's sermon was all about Gay Pride Day. How they should hate the sin and not the sinner...

In the middle of the sermon, while the priest was speaking. Johnny and Mary got up and walked out.

And took the slowest and longest way out of the building.

Then they called Mark and I and told us about it.

I was at first very moved by how much Johnny and Mary love Mark and I. I felt wonderfully proud and acknowledged.

But then I thought about it. And I'm sad. I'm sad that my father in law went somewhere for comfort and support. Looking for hope. And instead he found himself attacked and having to defend his son.

How can an organization hate how I live my life so bad?

So it was my dad's birthday on tuesday and we made arrangements to go out for dinner.

I have so much to say about how much I learned about myself in the two hours I was with him... I learned that I spent too much time trying to avoid him, his eyes and the offhanded remarks and what made him so frustrated and hard to be with was the sheer fact that I was shutting him out for so long.

We ate and chatted, mostly about my job, his job and my new car and silly anecdotes... All the stuff that I used to claim were nonsense and superficial to who I am... But I loved just hanging out hearing what's going on in his life and how he thinks... he's the one who told me about the CanOLA business... that's so odd.

Anyhow, this rambling blog is just because I had a really magical time eating chinese buffet in the suburbs with my dad on a thursday night.

Easily 10 years ago, Mark and I were doing a road trip to Buffalo... On the interstate we came across a car with a personal licence plate "1BAMFMAX." All of us spent a few minutes trying to decypher the plate at which point Hamish said something to the effect of the more personal you make your licence plate, the less it makes sense to anyone else...

At which point Justin looked up at the car (a Nissan Maxima) and the driver (a young african american full of da attitude...) and immediately said "i've got 1 Bad Ass Mother Fucking MAXima!"

I have no idea what that story sticks in my mind and not in anyone else's except now that my new car is going to be ready next week, I think every time I'm going to look at it, I'll say to myself "now I've got 1BAMFMAX too!"

we had a blast last night at our housewarming party... at one count it was 50 people in our condo at once... and that was only about half the invitees that could make it over the long weekend... i love my friends... but next party i'll need a bigger place!

i've lost 17 pounds in the last 12 weeks... there was a competition at GreatBigCo to lose 5% of your body weight and we all pitched in $40 bucks to do it.

i've lost 9.5% and i look and feel great! i suddenly have more energy in the mornings. i'm eating less and am satisfied with it. i actually crave going to the gym in the morning as a way to start my day. my fat jeans are literally falling off my butt. all feels incredible.

the contest at work ended today i wasn't the biggest loser. i think i came in a fairly close third. but i suggested to the group today that motivation my evapourate now that the contest is over and suggested we create a new contest to keep it off...

anyhow, i'm off to Lick's for lunch.

Catharsis

After much deliberation I decided to call my dad.

It's been over five years since we last talked... probably ten since we really had a pleasant moment between us.

I called him on Sunday night and chatted a little. He told me that he was glad I called. We made arrangements to meet for coffee on tuesday.

Tuesday was yesterday and we met at a Timothys near his place in Etobicoke.

He was concerned about my health. He was worried that I called him out of the blue because I was dying (I'm not btw) but once that was cleared up we got caught up on each other's lives. Where we live, what we do, our jobs, our relationships, our hobbies, our finances and such...

That in itself was pretty spectacular. A civil conversation. Then he told me again that he was glad I called and that he was glad that things seem to be doing well.

I apologized for being a jerk to him... I told him that I didn't expect him to forgive me. He acknowledged that it's all immaterial now... under the bridge and we can't change the past and that we both were responsible for we drifted apart.

He's never been a man of a lot of expression. So I know talking like this was really quite difficult for him.

He said he wasn't sure if or how we go on from there. I can't say I know either. I don't know if we'll see or talk to each other again. But I know the door isn't really closed.

And I know he's happy. and that he's happy that I'm happy too.

We walked out. Hugged. (never thought I ever hug him) and we drove off.

As I drove home on the Gardiner, I cried my eyes out.
